Jiu-Jitsu is unlike other extracurricular activities and traditional team sports. It’s about individual growth and it pushes you to develop your own style and technique. Being self-aware enhances your ability to improve and hold yourself accountable for your success. Jiu-Jitsu training is equal parts work and reward. It will improve your confidence and work ethic within a supportive environment. Most importantly, Jiu-Jitsu allows you to defend yourself and those around you in various situations.

Sara Lebeau

Owner & Head Instructor

Sarah LeBeau started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in July 2014 after receiving her black belt in Shotokan karate and yet being unsure if she would be able to defend herself if she had to do so on the ground. LeBeau attended one Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class and fell in love with the sport.

She is now a Black belt and enjoys competing in various local and international tournaments where she has won numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals including 2nd place in European IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship in 2023 and 3rd place in Europeans in 2018 and 2020. Sarah won 1st place in her division and 2nd place in the Open Class in Pan IBJJF No-Gi Championship in 2022 and 3rd place in Pan No-Gi Championship in 2021. Additionally she won 1st place in American National IBJJF Jiu Jitsu No-Gi Championship in her division and 2nd place in the Open Class. As well as 1st place in American National IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship in her division and 3rd place in the Open Class. Then she won 2nd in Pan IBJJF Jiu Jitsu Championship in 2022. She is CPR certified and Self Defense Certified.

Sarah’s husband and son also train making it a family experience. Her vision for her academy is to have a fun, family atmosphere where everyone can train to relieve stress and learn how to defend him or herself if the need ever arises.

Hallie Tompkins

Coach

Hallie Tompkins is a graduate of Mississippi State University, completing a bachelor degree in wildlife fisheries and aquaculture.

She works for the Mississippi department of wildlife fisheries and parks as a conservation officer. Hallie also serves in the Mississippi army national guard.

She began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while in university and believes it is one of the best ways to build and support self confidence that will carry over into every aspect of life, because it is truly a life sport it is for anyone at any age or ability.

Gregory Smith

Coach

Professor Gregory Smith was born in Meridian, Mississippi, and is a veteran of the United States Navy.

Currently, he works as a Geospatial Analyst at Stennis Space Center. Gregory graduated from American Military University in 2011 with a degree in Intelligence Studies. During his military service, he has had the opportunity to train in Judo for a number of years in the US and in Japan.

Gregory has competed and won at numerous tournaments both nationally and internationally; earning a bronze medal at the 2020 European IBJJF Championship, gold and silver at the 2020 New Orleans International Open, double silver at the 2021 New Orleans International Open, and a silver medal at the 2022 Pan IBJJF Championship. Professor Gregory teaches a Thursday morning class, and is willing to assist anyone in the achievement of their goals.

Robert Tate

Coach

Robert Tate is a veteran of the United States Army as a Healthcare specialist.

He also has an extensive medical background from being an EMT. Robert also has a degree in Process Technology and is currently working as a process tech at Sabic Innovative Plastics.

Robert says that BJJ allows oneself to open up and break personal barriers. The people of GU Hancock have become like family to him and even his three sons train.

History

Gracie United-Team Jucao South, Hancock County owner Sarah Lebeau began her martial arts journey with karate before switching to BJJ in 2014. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training built her self-defense skills and her passion for it was instant. In 2018, Gracie United-Team Jucao South, Hancock County was nearly closed due to lack of ownership. Sarah stepped up in order to keep the BJJ community alive in Bay St. Louis. Her passion for giving back to the small Hancock County community and building strong, confident individuals motivated her to step up to the challenge. Sarah takes great pride in her school being woman-owned. The achievements and perseverance she faced on her martial arts journey speaks to her capabilities. Now, she strives to set an example for all individuals to realize their potential.
