What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique. Most notably by applying joint-locks and chokes to defeat the opponent.
Am I too old to start?
Not at all! We have many students that start at different phases in their life. Jiu jitsu is truly a martial art for everyone and it can be tailored for each individual.
Is it safe for my child to train BJJ?
Absolutely! We have two different children’s classes to choose from starting as young as 3 led by our trained coaches. Our kids program focuses on the core values of discipline, respect and hard work that prepares kids for adult life, helping them to overcome modern problems
What makes your gym unique?
Our gym is woman-owned, with a strong emphasis on community, personal growth, and making martial arts accessible to everyone.
What is no gi Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu without the Gi is formally known as ‘NO GI’. In No Gi we are not allowed to grip the clothing. Instead, we rely on grips on the body such as wrist, arms, and legs to grapple and apply our submissions. No Gi training is an essential part of a fully rounded grappling game.
Do I need any experience?
No former experience is required. All levels of fitness can enjoy learning BJJ. All of our classes include all levels of experience, and we all help each other improve and learn as a team.
Is BJJ a violent sport?
I’ve met some of the nicest people through BJJ and made some of my best friends through training. I can’t speak for all academies but we provide a fun, safe environment to train and take every effort to ensure our students can enjoy learning this art injury free. Our motto is no egos on the mats and we train to get better not to “win”.
What equipment will I need?
Initially, nothing other than an open mind and shorts without pockets, a T-Shirt, shoes you can easily slide off, and a water bottle. If you fall in love with the art and wish to continue, you will be provided a uniform (gi) when you sign up. In our training No GI Jiu Jitsu, you will not wear the uniform. Instead we train without gripping onto the clothes so you need to wear either a dry fit shirt or rash guard. We sell both options at our academies if you need to purchase one. You will also wear shorts without pockets, metal or zippers for safety reasons. Board shorts, spats, or leggings are also acceptable. For safety reasons no jewelry or watches are allowed to be worn and we ask that your trim your nails.
Can women train Jiu Jitsu?
Of course you can! Our academy here is owned and ran by a female and we have many female students and coaches that train. The number of women who train and compete is Jiu Jitsu is ever growing and we are proud to be a part of it.
